How tax works on bookings

Set your rate once in Settings; Rennt calculates it per order, shows it to the customer, and keeps a running total for your state.

Rennt charges sales tax when you tell it to: set your tax rate in Settings (in the "What you offer" panel, alongside deposits) and every order from then on calculates tax automatically, shows it to the customer at checkout, and stores it on the booking.

Where you see it#

  • On each booking — the tax amount is part of the totals on the booking detail in Bookings.
  • In your exports — Export CSV has a dedicated Tax column, one row per booking. Filter out cancelled rows and sum it for any period.
  • In Reports — the Sales tax figure shows what you have charged, in one number. That is money you are holding for your state: set it aside, do not spend it.

Getting the rate right#

Enter the rate as a percent (8.75 for 8.75%). Which rate applies is your call, not Rennt's: in most states party rentals are taxable, and the correct rate is often the customer's delivery location, though many small operators use their own city's combined state+county+city rate. Whether delivery fees are taxable also varies by state. Ask your accountant once, set it, and revisit only when your state changes something.

Common gotchas#

  • Rate changed mid-season? New bookings use the new rate; existing bookings keep the tax that was calculated when they were created — which is what you want for orders already quoted and signed.
  • Tax-exempt customer (school, church, government)? Take those orders by phone with + New booking and handle the exemption certificate paperwork outside Rennt.
  • Charging no tax at all? Leave the rate empty. Nothing is added and the columns simply read zero.
!
Rennt calculates and tracks tax; it does not file or remit it. Put a monthly reminder on your calendar to move the Sales tax total into a separate account.
